Melody from a Traditional Breton folk song glorifying a legendary
Breton Knight “Fur”, who died in the Holy Land, probably in the Seventh Crusade.

He asks his comrades to bury him, if victorious and passed
Into the lord’s bosom from ripe old age, at home under his favorite Fir tree in the Breton town of Brissac. But if he should fall in the Holy Land, He begs his comrades: bury him there in the blessed ground.
The penultimate verse of the chant describes the outcome:

Med ar bloaz-man eñ zo kouezhet, (But this year the tree is felled)
O lin de lin da lan de lin da la la
Med ar bloaz-man eñ zo kouezhet, (But this year the tree is felled)
Soudard Ar Fur a zo marvet (And the soldier Fur is No more)

And the final stanza is a patriotic one,
Probably inserted not long after the Seventh Crusade,
during the turbulent years of The War of Breton Succession:

Komans e rae 'n douar da gleuzañ (And we began to dig)
O lin de lin da lan de lin da la la
Komans e rae 'n douar da gleuzañ (And we began to dig)
Gant ar Vretoned o ouelañ (The Bretons began to cry)

Although we have chosen to convey the feeling of the chant through an
Instrumental in this instance, Purification has produced a lyrical version
sung in Breton by Sir Marshall, which may become available at a later date.
